This is perhaps the millionth time you may have heard, "Do you watch K-dramas?". There are those like the writer of this piece who live on them, then there are those who watch them sporadically, and finally, there are those who wonder what all the fuss is about.

So what's the global appeal of these dramas? it is the storytelling, encompassing every possible genre and wholesome characters. From coming-of-age stories to slice-of-life narratives, slow-burn romances to thrillers, medical to period dramas, fantasy to current socio-cultural as well as political, audiences come across a diverse range of content. The high production values and aesthetically pleasing set designs further enhance the overall viewing experience.

K-dramas have also gone beyond gender stereotypes. We get gorgeous men who have no qualms in showcasing their vulnerabilities. Yes, it is okay for men to cry and show their emotions. Yes, these are men written by women thanks to the strong cadre of female writers. The feminine gaze also gives us bolder attitudes towards female sexuality, many times we have moments when the camera caresses and lingers on a shirtless male lead either in the gym or shower.

On the other hand, we get strong women, who are badass, bold and beautiful. They can be quirky too, messed up and eccentric. So that's the joy of watching a K-drama sometimes they heal you or make you think and sometimes they are the perfect getaway from the chaotic real world.

According to a survey the viewership of Korean titles went up by 400 per cent.
