BJP Aims To Capture Coimbatore In 2024 Lok Sabha Elections

Coimbatore, a key constituency in Tamil Nadu, has become a focal point for the BJP as they aim to expand their influence. The upcoming Lok Sabha elections on April 19 will see a fierce contest in the state, with Coimbatore being a significant battleground. The BJP has seen growth in this region over recent years, leading to the introduction of several central government schemes and projects, including the first Vande Bharat service between Chennai and Coimbatore. With Vanathi Srinivasan already serving as an MLA from Coimbatore South, the BJP is hopeful about capturing the Lok Sabha seat, with state president Annamalai taking an active role in the campaign.

Coimbatore stands out as an urbanized city second only to Chennai in Tamil Nadu, boasting a mix of industrial and agricultural significance alongside a burgeoning IT sector. This diverse economic base has seen Coimbatore host 19 Lok Sabha elections since 1952, with various parties winning over the years. The Left has secured eight victories, Congress six, while both DMK and BJP have won twice, and AIADMK once. The BJP's focus on Coimbatore stems from its historical performance and strategic importance.

BJP Targets Coimbatore in Election Strategy

In the past, the BJP made its mark in Coimbatore starting from 1989, with a notable increase in its vote bank. A significant moment came in 1998 when, allied with AIADMK, it won three seats in Tamil Nadu, including Coimbatore. This victory was partly attributed to sympathetic votes following the Coimbatore bomb blast. CP Radhakrishnan was the winning candidate, securing a substantial margin. Despite a change in alliances and subsequent elections, the BJP's presence in Coimbatore has been marked by both victories and defeats.

Vote share analysis reveals fluctuations over the years. From securing 55% of votes in 1998 to experiencing a drop to 38% in 2004, the BJP's performance has varied. The 2009 elections saw a further decline, with their candidate finishing fifth. However, the 2014 elections demonstrated resilience despite tough competition, with CP Radhakrishnan re-contesting and achieving a second-place finish.

The most recent election in 2019 saw the BJP again finish second as part of an alliance with AIADMK, showing an increase in their vote share to 31%. This consistent effort underscores why the BJP views Coimbatore as a stronghold and has fielded state president Annamalai for the upcoming contest. Despite facing stiff competition from parties like AIADMK and DMK, the BJP remains determined to make an impact in this crucial constituency.
