Amid Chants Of 'Captain, Captain', DMDK's Vijayakanth Cremated With Full State Honour
The family members of Vijayakant, the founder of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) who succumbed to pneumonia on December 28, 2023, performed the last rites on Friday. He was cremated with full state honors. To bid final goodbye to affectionately known as 'Captain,' Vijayakant supporters gathered in large numbers on the streets of Coimbatore.
The funeral procession began at around 2:45 PM and arrived at around 5:30 PM from Iluthidal for burial at the Demudika headquarters in Coimbatore.

According to the reports, Vijayakant was admitted to the hospital on November 18, requiring "pulmonary support," as mentioned by the medical facility. After nearly three weeks of hospitalization, he was discharged just a fortnight before his unfortunate passing.
Eminent personalities including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Stalin, Minister Udayanidhi, and DMK MP. DR Balu, Telangana Governor Tamilisai, former Union Minister Pon. Radhakrishnan, former minister Jayakumar, and others were present at the cremation center to pay homage to Captain.
Aside from politicians, a diverse array of celebrities, regular citizens, party associates, enthusiasts, and supporters assembled in extensive lines in and around Koyambedu to pay their final respects to Vijayakanth.
Reportedly, the state police encountered several difficulties in managing the crowd, as thousands gathered to offer homage throughout the day. Amid continuous chants of 'captain, captain,' the crowds paid their tributes.
