Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Which District Received Highest Rains In 24 Hours & What About Chennai?

At least 76 locations in Tamil Nadu witnessed heavy rains in the last 24 hours, the data released by the Regional Meteorological Centre said on Thursday morning.

The highest recorded rainfall was in Kodiayakarai in Nagapattinam district, which received 182.4 mm. Other areas in Nagapattinam, such as Thalaignayer and Velankanni, also witnessed significant downpours of 146.4 mm and 130.6 mm, respectively.

Chennai, too, saw heavy rains, with notable figures recorded in Kolathur (113.1 mm), Madhavaram (109.2 mm), Ambattur Rev (105.2 mm), Perambur (105 mm), and Ayapakkam (101.1 mm). Other regions such as Maduranthagam in Chengalpattu (117.3 mm), Mayiladuthurai (104.2 mm), and Thirukuvalai in Nagapattinam (104.2 mm) were also heavily affected.

Weather blogger R Pradeep John shared insights into the ongoing weather conditions, forecasting further rainfall in the state. He warned that South Tamil Nadu would continue to experience intense rains through today and tomorrow, with Chennai expected to witness short, heavy spells until the evening before the intensity tapers off.

John noted that interior districts, including Madurai, Virudhunagar, Theni, Tenkasi, Dindigul, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai, and Sivaganga, are likely to see very heavy rainfall. Additionally, the Delta region and the Kongu belt, including Coimbatore, Salem, Erode, and the Nilgiris, are expected to receive substantial rainfall. Tourist hotspots like Kodaikanal and Courtallam may also see heavy showers. John described the weather as favorable for the entire state.

In response to the conditions, the RMC has issued an orange alert for the districts of Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Pudukkottai, indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, a yellow alert has been issued for a wider range of districts, including Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Madurai, and Coimbatore, signaling moderate to heavy rainfall.
