Tamil Nadu Weather Update: Unseasonal Rains May Bring Relief Amid Rising Heat In Feb

Tamil Nadu may witness a surprising shift in weather patterns as unseasonal rains are likely to bring temporary relief during the peak summer build-up phase in late February and early March. While February is typically dry and marks the gradual intensification of summer across the state, weather enthusiasts are closely watching new developments over the Indian Ocean region.

Weather blogger R. Pradeep John has indicated the possible influence of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO), a significant tropical weather pattern known to impact rainfall activity. In a recent post, he noted that the MJO is finally entering the Indian Ocean with strong amplitude after remaining inactive during much of the Northeast Monsoon season in November and December.

Describing the MJO as a "King Maker," he suggested that its arrival could dramatically alter prevailing weather conditions. According to his tentative outlook, Tamil Nadu could receive rains from the last week of February through the first week of March - a period that is usually associated with dry and increasingly hot conditions. Strong MJO phases can trigger enhanced convection, potentially leading to widespread showers and thunderstorms across the state.

However, he cautioned that these are off-season rains and that forecasts should be interpreted carefully. Greater clarity on the potential rainfall event is expected around February 18 or 19.

Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Department (RMD) has reported that there has been no significant change in minimum temperatures across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal over the past 24 hours. Minimum temperatures were recorded 2 to 3 degrees Celsius below normal at a few places in Tamil Nadu, while remaining near normal in other areas.

Erode registered the highest maximum temperature in the plains at 34.4°C on Tuesday, underscoring the steady rise in daytime temperatures. Nearly 20 districts across the state recorded maximum temperatures exceeding 30°C, reflecting the ongoing summer build-up.

In contrast, cooler conditions prevailed in certain regions during the night and early morning hours. Tiruthani recorded the lowest minimum temperature in the plains at 17.0°C. In the hill stations, Kodaikanal experienced a chilly 6.6°C, making it the coldest recorded location in the state.

Additionally, shallow fog is likely to occur at isolated pockets in districts including Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Dindigul, and the Nilgiris during the early morning hours of February 12 and 13.

With temperatures steadily climbing and the possibility of rare February-March showers looming, Tamil Nadu's weather in the coming weeks could present an unusual mix of summer heat and off-season rainfall. Residents are advised to stay updated with official forecasts as conditions evolve.
