Tamil Nadu Weather: IMD Predicts Heavy Rains On January 11-12; Yellow Alert Issued

Tamil Nadu Weather: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced a heavy rainfall alert for various parts of Tamil Nadu, spotlighting Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, and Pudukottai districts, alongside Karaikal, with expectations of significant downpours for the upcoming Sunday. This alert follows a "yellow rain alert" indicating potential adverse weather conditions that the region should prepare for. The forecast not only underscores the imminent heavy rainfall but also signals a broader weather pattern that could affect the area's residents and infrastructure.

The weather scenario over Tamil Nadu is influenced by a cyclonic circulation located in the lower tropospheric levels over the Southeast Bay of Bengal and its adjacent Southwest Bay of Bengal. This atmospheric condition is set to bring light to moderate rain showers across coastal regions and parts of the interior. Specifically, the IMD anticipates "light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning very likely at a few places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Rayalaseema on 13 January; Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal during 12 – 14 January and Kerala & Mahe on 13 & 14 January with isolated heavy rainfall likely over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on 12 January," showcasing a broad spectrum of weather activity that could impact several regions.

Warnings of Thunderstorms and Lightning

Furthermore, the alert includes warnings for thunderstorms and lightning from January 12 to 14, affecting not just Tamil Nadu but also Puducherry and Karaikal. These weather phenomena highlight the need for caution among the residents, suggesting potential disruptions due to the severe weather conditions forecasted. The regional meteorological centre in Chennai has advised that while some areas may experience dry weather, particularly in the interior regions of Tamil Nadu, coastal areas alongside Puducherry and Karaikal are likely to witness light to moderate rain. This weather pattern underscores the unpredictable nature of regional climate conditions, necessitating preparedness among the local populace.

Impacts Beyond Tamil Nadu

The IMD's forecasts also extend beyond Tamil Nadu, predicting "light to moderate rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm, lightning is also very likely at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya on 13 & 14 January." This indicates a widespread weather disturbance affecting various parts of India, bringing attention to the need for vigilance and preparedness across multiple states.

In northern India, a dense fog has blanketed significant portions of the region, including iconic landmarks like the Taj Mahal, and has notably impacted New Delhi and the National Capital Region with thick fog, reducing visibility considerably. The weather department recorded a low temperature of 11 degrees Celsius in Delhi on a misty Saturday morning, with expectations of light rain or thunderstorms. Despite the foggy conditions causing several train delays, no flight cancellations or diversions were reported at Indira Gandhi International Airport.

The meteorological department also observed cold wave conditions in various parts of northern India, including Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, and eastern Uttar Pradesh, with ground frost reported in isolated areas of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Dense to very dense fog was a significant issue in Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, indicating the complex weather patterns currently affecting India.
