IMD Forecasts Heavy Snowfall And Cold Wave In Jammu & Kashmir This Weekend

Tourists in Jammu & Kashmir's higher regions experienced a delightful surprise as heavy snowfall over the past day turned the Valley into a stunning winter scene. This snowy weather is expected to persist throughout the week, benefiting both visitors and the tourism industry.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) attributes this snowfall to the second Western Disturbance (WD) of the year. These disturbances, originating from the Mediterranean Sea, move eastward into India. Typically, 5-7 such systems occur during December and January, providing essential winter rainfall that helps mitigate severe cold waves.

Snowfall

Western Disturbances Impact

A new disturbance is predicted to affect Northwest India starting Friday, January 10. From Friday to Sunday (January 10-12), moderate rainfall or snowfall is anticipated in the Western Himalayan Region. A yellow watch has been issued for today's precipitation forecast in the Valley, urging people to stay informed.

Despite the enchanting snowy landscapes, residents and tourists face harsh cold conditions. Jammu & Kashmir is currently enduring 'Chillai Kalan,' a 40-day period of extreme winter cold. The IMD forecasts a 4-5°C drop in nighttime temperatures this week.

Precautions for Tourists

Visitors are advised to dress appropriately for sub-zero temperatures and follow traffic advisories due to adverse weather conditions. Those in high-risk age groups should avoid extended exposure to the cold during this time.

No alerts have been issued for the upcoming weekend yet. However, it is crucial for both locals and tourists to remain cautious and take necessary precautions against potential weather disruptions.

This ongoing pattern of Western Disturbances ensures ample snowfall in Kashmir Valley this January. These extra-tropical cyclones are vital as they prevent extremely cold waves by bringing limited winter rainfall.

The picturesque transformation of Jammu & Kashmir into a winter wonderland continues to attract tourists while posing challenges due to biting cold temperatures. As weather conditions evolve, staying updated with forecasts and advisories remains essential for safety.
