Tamil Nadu Weather: Heavy Rains To Continue In Chennai; Holiday For Schools In 3 Districts
In the early hours of Wednesday, heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds swept across Chennai and nearby areas. The rainfall, which began last night, showed no signs of stopping, marking the second consecutive day of relentless showers. Areas including Perungudi, Velachery, Durai Pakkam, and Taramani experienced intense rain and wind.
According to the latest forecast from the Meteorological Department, these conditions are expected to continue, with rain predicted over the next three hours in several districts across Tamil Nadu.

An orange alert was issued for Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts, cautioning residents to brace for potentially hazardous weather in the near term. Chennai and nearby districts, such as Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Vellore, along with several others, are under a yellow alert, indicating moderate risk.
The downpour has led to water logging in certain areas, making roads slippery and affecting traffic flow. Additionally, there have been reports of minor damage caused by loose or unsecured structures in some parts of the city.
Is There A Holiday For Schools?
In response, authorities have declared school closures in Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal, though schools in Chennai remain open.

Weather blogger R Pradeep John commented on Tuesday's rains, noting that coastal areas like Pondicherry, Cuddalore, and Mayiladuthurai received heavy showers, marking significant rainfall records. He also highlighted moderate rains across Chennai, with nearby districts such as Namakkal, Ariyalur, and Perambalur also reporting substantial precipitation.
Looking ahead, John forecasted that the rains would extend to interior regions, with western districts like Coimbatore and Erode, as well as southern areas like Nellai and Tuticorin, also expected to see rainfall. He noted that Pondicherry's "century" rainfall milestone was a welcome relief for the region, which had been experiencing a dry spell this season. For Chennai, he anticipated ongoing rain spells, especially during the night and morning hours, with intermittent heavy showers likely throughout the day.
