The RMC attributed the weather change to multiple systems, including a cyclonic circulation over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, a north-south trough running across Coastal Tamil Nadu to North Sri Lanka, and another upper air cyclonic circulation over North Interior Karnataka. Additionally, a low-pressure area is likely to develop over the Northwest and adjoining Westcentral Bay of Bengal around August 13.

Parts of North Tamil Nadu like Vellore and Ranipet districts could see third straight day of widespread thunderstorms as convergence favours the region, weather blogger Chennai Rains said. Chennai's prospects could swing between either widespread heavy rains or nothing if the storms weaken just before reaching the coast. The next two to three days represent the best chance though, the blogger added.

Rainfall data from Thursday showed Arcot and Kaveripakkam in Ranipet district receiving the highest at 9 cm each, followed by Ambur (Tirupattur), Wallajah (Ranipet), and Ammundi (Vellore) with 8 cm each.
