According to the RMC, conditions are favourable for the withdrawal of the Southwest Monsoon from the remaining parts of the country within the next 24 hours. Simultaneously, the setting in of easterly and northeasterly winds over the southern peninsular region and the adjoining Bay of Bengal indicates that the Northeast Monsoon rainfall is likely to commence over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, South Interior Karnataka, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Rayalaseema during the next 24 hours.
The Met department also noted that an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean has now shifted to lie over coastal Tamil Nadu and adjoining Comorin area, extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level.
Another cyclonic circulation persists over the Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Lakshadweep area, extending up to 5.8 km above mean sea level and tilting southward with height. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over the Southeast Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep region off the Kerala-Karnataka coasts around October 19, 2025, the weather agency said.
Weather blogger R. Pradeep John, popularly known as the Tamil Nadu Weatherman, also shared an update for Chennai and the KTCC region. He wrote: "KTCC (Chennai) update for 16.10.2025 - There will be sunshine and sudden spells out of nowhere. From evening/night the rains will pick up. So do carry your raincoat and umbrella even if it is sunny! Enhanced rains will be seen from October 23 to 30 for KTCC and there's a chance of a possible chakkram (cyclone) forming in the Bay."
For Chennai, the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 31°C, while the minimum temperature will be around 24-25°C.
With the onset of the Northeast Monsoon imminent, the state is likely to experience widespread rainfall activity in the coming days.
