Tamil Nadu Water Levels In Dam (July 27): Mettur Dam To Cross 100 Feet Today

The water level at Mettur Dam is expected to reach 100 feet on Saturday, July 28. As of Friday, it stands at 99.11 feet, following a significant rise of nearly 7 feet from the previous evening's level of 92.62 feet.

This increase is attributed to the release of water from Karnataka's Krishnaraja Sagar and Kabini dams, driven by substantial rainfall in the region.

The Mettur Dam, which has a full capacity of 120 feet, saw its water level rise from 44.62 feet just a week ago. Starting July 14, Karnataka began releasing water into the Cauvery River at a rate of 20,000 cusecs, which has since been increased to 80,000 cusecs. This surge in water inflow has led to a steady rise in the Mettur Dam's water level, outpacing the outflow.

This trend is not isolated to Mettur; other dams in the region are also experiencing rising water levels. Tamil Nadu's network of dams is crucial for managing the state's water resources, supporting drinking water supplies, agriculture, and electricity generation. The state is home to 116 large dams, with 78 managed by the Tamil Nadu Water Resources Department (TNWRD). Key dams, including Mettur Dam on the Cauvery River and Vaigai Dam in the Western Ghats, are essential for agriculture, power generation, and overall water management.

In addition to Mettur, several other dams have also reported increased water levels, reflecting the broader impact of the recent rainfall.
