Tamil Nadu Train Accident: Here Are The Helpline Numbers

An express train collided with a goods train in Tiruvallur in Tamil Nadu, causing a fire to break out in two coaches of the passenger train. The incident occurred involving Train No. 12578, the Mysuru Junction - Darbhanga Bagmati Superfast Express, at Kavarapettai, which is located in the Chennai Division. Four A/C compartments of the express train have derailed.

The Bagmati Express departed from Mysuru at 10:30 AM, heading towards Darbhanga, when it crashed into a freight train near the Tamil Nadu-Andhra Pradesh border.

The collision led to several coaches derailing, with some catching fire. Reports indicate that a few passengers sustained injuries, although specific details on the number and severity of the injuries have yet to be confirmed.

"Six coaches of Train No. 12578 (MYS-DBG) Mysuru-Darbhanga were derailed after colliding with a goods train around 8:30 PM. While no fatalities have been reported, a few passengers sustained injuries. A medical relief van and rescue team have departed from Chennai Central," Southern Railway stated.

The collision occurred at Kavarapettai in the Chennai Railway Division after the Bagmati Superfast Express passed Ponneri station at 8:27 PM and received a green signal to proceed through Kavarapettai station's mainline. As the train entered Kavarapettai, the crew experienced a heavy jolt, causing the train to switch to the loop line where it struck a stationary goods train.

All injured passengers were promptly taken to nearby hospitals. Tiruvallur District Collector T. Prabhushankar, senior state officials, and the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Chennai, Southern Railway, have rushed to the site. Tamil Nadu Police reported that additional rescue teams and ambulances are en route.

Alternative transport arrangements have been made for the stranded passengers.
