Tamil Nadu Rains: From Heatwave To Downpour, Weather Takes Sharp Turn As Madurai To Kanyakumari Gets Heavy Rai

In just a week or ten days, Tamil Nadu's weather has drastically changed. The state has shifted from sweltering heat to heavy rains, an unusual occurrence for the month of May.

Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Madurai, and several other districts across Tamil Nadu experienced substantial rainfall. Kamudhi in Ramanathapuram district recorded the highest rainfall with 12 cm on Sunday. This was followed by Tallakulam in Madurai with 11 cm, Pullambadi in Tiruchirappalli district with 10 cm, and Tirumayam in Pudukkottai district with 8 cm.

From Sweltering Heat To Heavy Rains

Other notable rainfall measurements include 7 cm in Vettikadu (Thanjavur district), Karaikudi (Sivagangai district), Kumarapalayam (Namakkal district), Thalavadi (Erode district), Kariyakovil Dam (Salem district), Budalur (Thanjavur district), Sehu Bhasakar Agri College AWS (Sivaganga district), Vedasandur (Dindigul district), and Nandhiyar Head (Tiruchirappalli district), the data from the Regional Metorologial Department says.

For the next five days, the RMD has given an yellow alert to many places that include Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi.

A yellow alert indicates severely bad weather over several days, suggesting the possibility of worsening conditions that could disrupt daily activities.

Yellow Alert For These Districts Till May 24

May 20: Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivaganga, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam & Mayiladuthurai districts and Karaikal area

May 21: Kanyakumari,Tirunelveli, Madurai, Dindigul, Tiruppur, Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam & Mayiladuthurai districts and Karaikal area.

May 22: Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts.

May 23: Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanyakumari districts.

May 24: Nilgiris and Kanyakumari districts.

The weather-monitoring agency has issued an orange alert to isolated places over Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Theni, Dindigul, Pudukkottai and Thanjavur districts for May 20. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Theni, Virudhunagar and Tenkasi districts on May 21.

According to the Regional Meteorological Department (RMD), Chennai is expected to have partly cloudy skies. Light to moderate rain may occur in some areas. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 34°C, while the minimum temperature is expected to be between 27°C and 28°C.

It has to be noted that Chennai has been getting light to moderate rains in the last few days.
