Tamil Nadu Bans Sale Of Cotton Candy Due To Cancer-Causing Element: Health Minister
The sale of cotton candy has been banned in Tamil Nadu due to the alarming presence of a cancer-causing element, as announced by State Health Minister Ma Subramanian on Saturday, following a food lab analysis.
Rhodamine-B was found in cotton candy and various other colored sweets by the Food Analysis Laboratory, deeming them unsafe and substandard for consumption, reported ANI.

It was declared by Mr. Subramanian that any involvement in the manufacture, sale, serving, or packing of Rhodamine B-laced products would result in stringent action, terming it a punishable offense. Directives have also been issued to food safety authorities to conduct thorough inspections and take strict actions against violators.
The neighbouring Union territory of Puducherry has already implemented a ban on cotton candy. This ban is expected to affect the livelihood of hundreds of cotton candy vendors and manufacturers across the state.
Before Tamil Nadu, It was Puducherry
The sale of cotton candy has been banned in Puducherry after the usage of a toxic chemical was found by government officials in its making. The ban was announced by Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, a week ago.
- The governor's appeal conveyed that a toxic substance named 'Rhodamine B' had been found to be used in the cotton candies consumed by children and others in Puducherry.
- The public was urged to refrain from purchasing them due to their harmful effects on overall health.
- Government officials were instructed by the governor to inspect all cotton candy-selling shops.
- Instructions were given to seize those where the presence of the toxic substance is found.
- Puducherry Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan stated that shops selling cotton candies are directed to be inspected.
- It was emphasized that they will be seized if the presence of this toxic substance is found in the cotton candies.
- Urging everyone to make informed choices, the governor emphasized that people should be aware that food items containing color additives must not be given to children.
