TNPDCL to Boost Workforce During Monsoon to Tackle Power Outages
Facing mounting criticism over long power cuts and sluggish night-time repairs, the Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) has decided to temporarily strengthen its field staff during the southwest monsoon, DT Next reported.
A directive issued on May 27 confirms that additional workers will be deployed between June 2 and July 16 to keep electricity supply steady and respond quickly to breakdowns caused by heavy rain, strong winds, and falling trees.
The shortage of manpower has been a recurring issue, slowing fault repairs and frustrating consumers across Chennai and other districts. To plug the gap, TNPDCL has set clear limits on how many extra staff can be hired:
Chennai & Kancheepuram: up to 10 per section
Hill stations (Nilgiris, Yercaud, Kodaikanal, Thalavady): up to 8 per section
Other regions: up to 6 per section
This monsoon plan replaces the earlier summer arrangement that ran from February to May.
The corporation has also tightened rules: senior engineers must keep detailed records of how the temporary staff are used, follow strict billing procedures, and avoid hiring relatives of existing employees. Any violation, the circular warns, will be treated seriously.
Officials say the move is designed to cut response times and reduce the frustration of consumers who often wait hours for power to return after storms.
