Chennai Metro News: Airport-To-City Commute To Get Further Easier With CMRL’s New Trains
Travelling from Chennai Airport to the city is set to become even more convenient as the Chennai Metro Rail Ltd. (CMRL) prepares to purchase new trains.
The Chennai Metro currently operates two main lines: the Blue Line and the Green Line. The Blue Line, a critical artery of the city's transport network, stretches from Chennai Airport to Wimco Nagar Depot, covering a distance of 32.65 kilometres (20.29 miles).

This line includes 26 stations, with 13 underground and the rest elevated or at ground level. Operations on the Blue Line began in May 2018, with the stretch from Saidapet to AG-DMS.
As of 2022, the Chennai Metro runs from 5 AM to 11 PM, maintaining a train frequency of one every six minutes during peak hours and every twelve minutes during lean hours on the Blue Line. This robust schedule caters to the daily influx of passengers, which averages between 200,000 to 300,000 people. The metro's efficiency and punctuality have made it a popular choice among Chennai's residents for their daily commute.
In response to the growing passenger numbers, CMRL is gearing up to purchase 28 new trains, each consisting of six coaches. This strategic move aims to improve both the affordability and comfort of metro travel. The new trains are expected to significantly enhance the metro's capacity and efficiency, making it an even more attractive option for commuters.
The expansion and enhancement of the Chennai Metro are set to revolutionize the city's public transportation. With the new trains and extended services, commuting in Chennai will become more seamless and comfortable, benefitting both residents and visitors.
