During the Indian Air Force (IAF) airshow at Chennai's Marina Beach, four attendees tragically lost their lives, and 96 others were hospitalised due to heatstroke. The event took place on Sunday as part of the 92nd IAF Day celebrations. This unfortunate incident has been reported by various media outlets.

The airshow, which was held between the Lighthouse and Chennai Port, attracted a massive crowd. According to the Defence Ministry, over 15 lakh people attended the event. The show featured an impressive display of 72 aircraft, including Rafale, SU-30, MIGs, Jaguars, and Tejas.

High-profile Attendance at IAF Event

The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, MK Stalin, was present as the chief guest for this significant occasion. Other notable attendees included Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, Deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin, state ministers, and Chennai Mayor R Priya. Their presence highlighted the importance of this event in showcasing India's air power.

The theme for this year's celebration was 'Sashakt, Saksham, Atmanirbhar' which translates to Potent, Powerful, Self-reliant. This theme underscores the strength and capabilities of the Indian Air Force. The event is set to be recognised in the Limca Book of World Records for its scale and grandeur.

Heatstroke Concerns Amidst Celebrations

Despite the grandeur of the event, it was marred by health concerns due to extreme heat conditions. Many spectators suffered from heatstroke during the show. The large turnout combined with high temperatures contributed to these health issues among attendees.

The tragic loss of life and numerous hospitalisations have raised questions about safety measures at such large-scale events. Ensuring adequate facilities and precautions against weather-related risks is crucial for future gatherings.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of prioritising public safety alongside celebrating national achievements. As authorities investigate further into this matter, it is hoped that lessons will be learned to prevent similar occurrences in future events.
