7th Pay Commission: Is DA Hike With Diwali Bonus On The Cards For Tamil Nadu Govt Employees?
Tamil Nadu government employees are in for a festive surprise this year, as reports suggest that the state government is preparing to announce a special Diwali bonus along with a second hike in the Dearness Allowance (DA). This double dose of good news is expected to bring significant financial relief and festive cheer to the employees.
The government is reportedly preparing to make an announcement in this regard. The central government employees are likely to get a 3% increase in DA for its employees and Tamil Nadu state government employees are likely to follow suit. This would bring the total DA hike to 53%, with the increase taking effect from July 1.

What makes this even more exciting is the possibility of a double bonus for state government employees, expected to be unveiled around the same time. Last year, non-gazetted employees received a bonus of Rs 7,000, and this year, a higher amount is anticipated. However, the proposed DA hike could place an additional burden of Rs 3,000 crore on the state's finances. Further details about the bonus and DA hike are expected to be released soon, heightening anticipation among government employees.
Central Government Boosts Minimum Wage Rates with VDA Hike
In another significant development, the Central Government has announced an increase in minimum wage rates for workers, particularly those in the unorganized sector, by revising the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA). This change aims to help workers manage rising living costs and is set to take effect from October 1, 2024.
The revision will benefit workers across various sectors, including construction, loading and unloading, housekeeping, mining, agriculture, and more. The last wage revision occurred in April 2024, and this latest adjustment marks a continued effort to improve the financial well-being of workers.
The new minimum wage rates are structured based on skill level-unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled-and geographical area (A, B, and C). For instance, in Area "A," unskilled workers in construction, sweeping, and cleaning will now earn Rs 783 per day (Rs 20,358 per month). Semi-skilled workers will receive Rs 868 per day (Rs 22,568 per month), while skilled and clerical workers, along with watch and ward personnel without arms, will be paid Rs 954 per day (Rs 24,804 per month). Highly skilled workers and watch and ward personnel with arms will earn Rs 1,035 per day (Rs 26,910 per month).
This revision is part of the Central Government's policy to adjust the VDA twice a year, on April 1 and October 1, based on the average rise in the Consumer Price Index for industrial workers over six months.
More detailed information about sector-wise and area-specific minimum wage rates is available on the official website of the Chief Labour Commissioner (Central), Government of India.
As both the state and central governments prepare to announce these financial benefits, workers across the board can look forward to greater economic support in the coming months.
