Why Are Tomato Prices So High In Bengaluru?

While the price of beans has come down to ₹150 per kg in retail markets in Bengaluru, the price of tomatoes has taken a hit due to the hot and rainy weather. The price of tomatoes has increased to ₹65-₹70 per kg in retail stores, making it a challenging time for vegetable buyers.

The price of beans was previously hovering around ₹200 per kg in all retail stores due to poor supply caused by the extremely hot summer this year. However, with the vegetable growing regions around Bengaluru receiving good rainfall in the last couple of weeks, the supply of beans has increased. The manager of a HOPCOMS stall on Rest House Road said that while the supply of beans has not increased significantly, the price is expected to come down further due to the monthly crop.

On the other hand, the supply of tomatoes has been affected by the heat and rain at unexpected times. Tomato plants were wilting away due to heat, and now the quality of the fruit has deteriorated due to rain. This has led to a surge in prices, with a 20-kg bag of tomatoes costing around ₹1,000 (₹50 per kg).

The prices of other vegetables like carrot and capsicum are also on the higher side, selling at ₹70-75 per kg. The prices of green leafy vegetables, especially coriander, have gone up due to the monsoon showers. The availability of coriander leaves has reduced due to rainfall, making it currently sell at ₹300 per kg.
