RCB Social Media Posts Fuelled Crowd Surge in Bengaluru Stampede; FIR Still Pending
Bengaluru turned chaotic on June 4 after a tragic stampede during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations, which claimed 11 lives and injured 47 others. A key reason for the overwhelming crowd was RCB's repeated social media announcements about a victory parade-posted. Despite the fatal incident, the Bengaluru City Police have not yet registered a First Information Report (FIR), raising serious concerns over the investigation.

RCB's Social Media Posts Drove Massive Crowd Gathering
RCB's official social media accounts began announcing the victory parade early Wednesday morning, with multiple updates continuing until mid-afternoon i.e 3.14 PM. These posts encouraged fans to flood Bengaluru streets, especially around M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and Vidhana Soudha, leading to over two lakh people gathering across the city.

City police had raised concerns about security and crowd management beforehand. Authorities recommended a limited-entry event at the stadium rather than an open victory parade. However, the ongoing social media updates by RCB ignited enthusiasm among fans, overwhelming police preparations and crowd control measures.
Police Did Not Approve the Parade, Yet Crowd Kept Growing
Despite Bengaluru Traffic Police publicly stating there was no approved parade by noon on June 4, traffic diversions were set up later in the day. This unclear messaging and political pressure contributed to confusion. The sudden influx of fans outside the stadium caused stampedes at multiple gates, leading to tragic deaths and injuries.
FIR Registration Still Pending: Only Unnatural Death Reports Filed
Even after the stampede, Bengaluru Police have not filed an FIR for the deaths. Instead, 11 Unnatural Death Reports (UDRs) have been registered. FIR registration is crucial for initiating a criminal investigation, and its absence has caused public outrage and calls for accountability.
A detailed magisterial inquiry has been announced to identify gaps in event planning, crowd management, and communication among RCB organizers, police, and government authorities.
RCB faces criticism for repeatedly promoting the parade via social media, directly influencing the massive turnout.
The tragedy highlights the urgent need for stricter crowd control protocols, clearer communication, and responsible event promotion to prevent similar disasters.
