Namma Metro Pink Line Completion By December 2026: Tunneling Complete, Track Installation Underway
The much-anticipated Namma Metro Pink Line in Bengaluru, connecting Kalena Agrahara and Nagawara, has had its launch date postponed to December 2026, as announced by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). Initially slated for a 2025 opening, the 21.3 km line will be rolled out in two phases, providing enhanced connectivity and easing traffic congestion across the city's southern and northern regions.
The Pink Line will span over 21 kilometers, linking several high-traffic areas and benefiting thousands of daily commuters. Phase 1, which encompasses an elevated stretch from Kalena Agrahara to Tavarekere (7.5 km), is expected to be finished by December 2025. Phase 2, featuring an underground tunnel from Dairy Circle to Nagawara (13.76 km), is projected to open by December 2026.

As of October 31, 2023, tunnelling work on the Pink Line was completed with the successful conclusion of the ninth Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), named Bhadra. Rail installation is now underway, with an expected completion target of October 2025. Tex Mako Rail and Engineering Ltd. has been awarded a ₹521.76 crore contract for track laying throughout Metro Phase 2, which includes the Pink Line.
Track installation progress has reached key stations like MG Road and Shivajinagar, with ballastless tracks already in place between National Military School (Vellara Junction) and Cantonment Bamboo Bazaar station. Alignment work is currently in progress between Dairy Circle and Langford Town stations, with further signalling and track adjustments anticipated to take an additional six to twelve months. A trial run is expected to begin after these adjustments, lasting approximately four months before full operations commence.
BMRCL has confirmed that 90% of the 18 stations on the Pink Line are in advanced stages of construction. However, work on ramps and final touches has not yet begun. Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) is manufacturing 16 driverless trains for this route, with the first delivery expected by June 2025, and subsequent deliveries of two to three trains each month.
Elm Company is overseeing the installation of the signalling system for the Pink Line, which is also being implemented on the Blue Line connecting to Kempegowda International Airport. The Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) system will ensure optimal operation and safety for the driverless trains. Platform Screen Doors (PSDs) will be installed at all 12 underground stations and six elevated sections to further enhance passenger safety.
Despite challenges during the tunnelling process, including TBM machinery getting stuck at various points, BMRCL officials are confident that progress is on track. With the new target set for December 2026, the Pink Line is set to become a pivotal addition to Bengaluru's public transport network, transforming the city's commuting landscape.
