Meta Responds to Siddaramaiah’s Complaint, Promises to Fix Kannada Translation Errors
Social media giant Meta has issued an official apology after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah raised concerns over flawed Kannada translations appearing on Facebook and Instagram. The CM had flagged the issue, stating that these errors were distorting facts and misleading users, particularly in official communications.
Meta responded promptly, acknowledging the issue and confirming that corrective measures had been implemented. "We fixed an issue that briefly caused this inaccurate Kannada translation," a company spokesperson said, adding that steps have been taken to avoid a repeat of such incidents.

Karnataka CM Urges Responsible Social Media Practices
Siddaramaiah took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to voice his concerns. He highlighted the importance of accuracy in language translation, especially when dealing with government-related content.
"Social media platforms must act responsibly," he posted, urging citizens to be cautious while reading translated content online. He warned that machine-generated translations often lack accuracy and may mislead the public.
Government Seeks Suspension of Faulty Translation Feature
On July 16, KV Prabhakar, media advisor to the Chief Minister, sent an official email to Meta, drawing attention to the issue. The Karnataka government urged the platform to temporarily suspend its automatic Kannada translation feature until its accuracy could be ensured.
Meta's AI translation tool is widely used on both Facebook and Instagram for rendering content into regional languages. However, the recent errors in Kannada translation brought the tool under scrutiny, especially given its influence on public understanding.
Public Trust and Translation Technology
The incident raises larger concerns about the reliability of AI-based translation tools, particularly when they are used to translate sensitive or official information. Misinterpretations can significantly distort public messaging, eroding trust in both government and tech platforms.
Siddaramaiah reiterated that negligence by global tech companies could harm public trust and lead to widespread misinformation. The episode has amplified calls for social media companies to ensure human oversight when deploying machine translation in languages like Kannada.
Meta Promises Accuracy Improvements
In its response, Meta expressed regret and assured that the issue had been addressed. The company reiterated its commitment to improving translation accuracy, especially in Indian regional languages.
As digital platforms continue to expand their regional language capabilities, the incident serves as a reminder of the vital role accurate translations play in maintaining clarity, trust, and accountability in public communication.
