Bengaluru Meat Ban: Slaughterhouses to Remain Shut on April 10, Here's Why

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has imposed a complete ban on the sale of all kinds of meat, including chicken and mutton, in Bengaluru on April 10, 2025 in observance of Mahavir Jayanti.

Bengaluru Meat Ban Slaughterhouses to Remain Shut on April 10 For Mahavir Jayanti

According to the official order, slaughterhouses will remain shut, and the sale and slaughter of animals will be strictly prohibited across city limits. The directive has been issued by the Joint Director of BBMP's Animal Husbandry Department and is part of the city's tradition to respect important religious observances.

The civic body enforces such meat bans every year on select national and religious occasions including Mahavir Jayanti, Ram Navami, Gandhi Jayanti, and Martyrs' Day (Sarvodaya Din).

Why the Ban?

Mahavir Jayanti is a significant festival for the Jain community, commemorating the birth of Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism. The religion places strong emphasis on non-violence (Ahimsa), and as a mark of respect, civic bodies across India often announce meat sale restrictions on this day.

This year, Mahavir Jayanti falls on Thursday, April 10, and the ban will be in effect throughout the day.
