Karnataka Weather Alert: What's The Forecast For Bengaluru This Weekend?

Bengaluru is likely to be cloudy today i.e on Thursday, with the possibility of light rains later in the afternoon and evening. This adds to the already wet conditions in the India's Silicon Valley, following the recent heavy rains and thunderstorms. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and be prepared for further rainfall.

On the same lines, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru, the garden city, on May 16, warning of heavy rains, thunderstorms, and lightning.

Rainy Day in Bengaluru

Bengaluru Weather Forecast:

The weather in Bengaluru from May 16 to May 21 will be wet, with rain forecasted throughout the week. Expect partly cloudy skies with intermittent spells of rain or thundershowers on May 16, 17, and 19. On May 18, the sky will be generally cloudy with rain or thundershowers. Towards May 20 and 21, the weather will remain partly cloudy with rain or thunderstorms. Temperatures will range from 23°C to 33°C.

Bengaluru on Orange alert

Pre-monsoon showers are lashing Karnataka, and the rains are expected to continue until May 22 in the state. The IMD has issued an orange alert has been issued for the southern interior districts on May 18, 19, and 20. It is predicted that these districts will experience heavy rainfall ranging from 115.5 mm to 204.5 mm on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Additionally, the Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for districts around Bengaluru and Shimoga, where heavy rain is expected.

On May 17, Kalaburagi, Yadgiri, Koppal, Raichur, and Gadag districts are likely to witness heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning. Stormy rainfall is expected in Davangere, Bellary, Chikmagalur, Shimoga, and Hassan districts, while moderate rain is likely in the rest of the districts. Most parts of the state are experiencing cloudy weather, leading to a drop in temperature by 2 to 4 degrees Celsius.

Heavy rain is predicted for Bengaluru, Kodagu, Chitradurga, Tumkur, Kolar, Chikkamagaluru, Shimoga, Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Bengaluru Rural, Mandya, Ramanagara, and Hassan districts on May 18, 19, and 20. The IMD has indicated that most parts of Karnataka will receive rain during these three days, with an orange alert issued for the southern interior districts. Moderate rainfall is expected over the state on May 21 and 22.

The heavy rainfall has led to significant impacts beyond transportation issues. Bengaluru's tree-lined streets suffered with over 270 trees uprooted and numerous branches broken due to the storms. The aftermath highlights the city's vulnerability to extreme weather events.

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) responded swiftly to mitigate damages, with hundreds of fallen trees attended to and roadblocks cleared promptly. The Bengaluru Traffic Police worked tirelessly to manage traffic flow and update commuters on affected routes, ensuring smooth navigation through the rain-soaked streets.

Weather Forecast for the Day:

Vijay, a well-known weather enthusiast recognised for his popular page 'Namma Karnataka Weather, said that there is a possibility of scattered light to moderate rainfall across several regions, including Chikkamagaluru, Shivamogga, Haveri, Hassan, Gadag, Darwad, Chamarajanagara, Kodagu, Chikkaballapura, Davanagere, Belagavi, and Dakshin-Ghats. Heavy rains are also possible in a few places within these regions.

Additionally, there is a possibility of scattered light showers across Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mandya, Kolar, Uttara Kannada (UK), Karavali, and Ramanagara.

Weather Patterns:

The Low-Pressure Area (LPA) across the Gulf of Mannar (GOM) is sending moisture across the Southern Peninsula, leading to widespread showers across South Tamil Nadu.

Convergence is also visible across the windward and leeward parts of Malnad. This convergence could result in heavy rains in one or two places in this zone.

Red alert for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry

The IMD has issued a red alert for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. Heavy rain is expected in these areas from May 17 to 20. Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for Kerala and Mahe, with heavy rain expected from May 18 to May 20.
