Karnataka Weather Alert: Kodagu, Coastal Belt, Hill Districts See Heavy Rains As Monsoon Onset in Sight
Karnataka weather alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert for parts of Karnataka, warning of intense rainfall activity as the southwest monsoon inches closer. The bulletin issued on May 23 highlights the likelihood of widespread heavy to very heavy showers, with isolated instances of extremely heavy rainfall expected across the state.

Coastal Karnataka: Red Alert
A red alert has been issued for the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada. The IMD has forecast scattered heavy to very heavy rain and isolated extremely heavy downpours, accompanied by gusty winds reaching 40-50 kmph. Most areas are likely to receive moderate rain, but some could witness intense spells.
South Interior Karnataka: Red and Orange Alerts
The red alert extends to parts of South Interior Karnataka. Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, and Shivamogga are under red alert, with the IMD predicting extremely heavy rainfall and gusty winds.
Meanwhile, an orange alert has been issued for Mysuru, Hassan, and Chamarajanagar districts. These areas are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rain and thundershowers, along with gusty winds up to 50 kmph at isolated places. Moderate rainfall is expected across most locations in these districts.
Bengaluru Weather Forecast: Yellow Alert
A yellow alert has been declared for Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Mandya, and Ramanagara. These areas may experience heavy rain and thundershowers at isolated spots, with gusty winds up to 50 kmph, and moderate rain across most parts.
North Interior Karnataka: Mixed Alerts
In North Interior Karnataka, an orange alert is in effect for Dharwad, Gadag, Belagavi, and Haveri, where heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected at one or two locations.
Bagalkot, Kalaburagi, and Vijayapura are also under an orange alert for isolated heavy showers with moderate rain expected elsewhere.
Meanwhile, Bidar, Koppal, Raichur, and Yadgir are likely to see moderate rainfall and gusty winds, although no specific warning has been issued for these districts.
Other Regions: No Warning, But Rain Likely
Districts such as Ballari, Chikkaballapura, Chitradurga, Kolar, Vijayanagara, Tumakuru, and Davanagere are expected to receive moderate rainfall and gusty winds (40-50 kmph). However, the IMD has not issued any weather alerts for these areas.
Bengaluru Weather Forecast
For Bengaluru Urban, the forecast includes generally cloudy skies and light to moderate showers, with the possibility of isolated heavy rain and winds at 30-40 kmph over the coming days.
Southwest Monsoon Onset Nearing Kerala
The IMD has stated that conditions are favorable for the onset of the southwest monsoon over Kerala within the next two days. The monsoon is expected to advance into parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and the Bay of Bengal, covering portions of Northeast India soon after.
A well-marked low-pressure area persists over the East-central Arabian Sea off the Konkan coast, and it's likely to intensify into a depression within 24 hours. Multiple cyclonic circulations and troughs across the country are contributing to the pre-monsoon surge.
