Karnataka Bandh on March 22: Will Schools Be Closed Due To Shutdown? What It Means Students

The Karnataka Bandh scheduled for March 22 has left parents, students, and teachers uncertain about whether schools will remain open or closed on that day. The bandh has been called by pro-Kannada organizations in response to the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill and a recent incident in Belagavi, where a Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) bus conductor was attacked for not speaking Marathi.

Karnataka Bandh on March 22 Will Schools Be Closed

Impact on Schools Amid Exam Season

The bandh comes at a crucial time for students, as the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) board exams begin on March 21. However, no SSLC exams are scheduled for March 22, the day of the bandh. Despite this, some lower-grade students have exams on that day.

The Associated Managements of Private Unaided Schools in Karnataka has confirmed that exams will proceed as planned. The association has expressed concerns that postponing or canceling exams could disrupt students' academic schedules.

"We want to participate in the protest, but we can only extend moral support due to the ongoing exams across the state. Canceling or postponing them will affect children, which we don't want to happen," said D Shashi Kumar, General Secretary of the association, as quoted by The Times of India.

Major Transport Disruptions Expected

The bandh is expected to cause significant transportation issues, as Ola and Uber drivers under the Ola Uber Drivers' and Owners' Association have pledged their support, meaning cabs will not be available. Additionally, a large portion of Bengaluru's 2 lakh autorickshaws may not operate, potentially affecting students who rely on them for their daily commute.

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has not yet confirmed whether buses will operate. If bus services are disrupted, students and employees may struggle to reach their destinations safely.

The bandh is also being observed as a protest against the attack on KSRTC staff by pro-Marathi groups in Belagavi. Pro-Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj is leading the bandh, and several organizations, including KSRTC, BMTC employees' associations, and Ola, Uber, and auto unions, have extended their support.

Residents are advised to complete their essential tasks before Saturday, as transportation services will be severely impacted.

Public Services Affected

  • Public Transport: KSRTC and BMTC have expressed solidarity, indicating potential disruptions in bus services. Commuters relying on public transport should make alternate arrangements.
  • Banks: While the bandh itself does not affect banking services, March 22 is the fourth Saturday of the month, meaning banks will remain closed. People are advised to complete banking tasks by Friday.
  • Shops: Ration card holders planning to purchase essentials from fair price shops should do so before March 22, as these shops are expected to remain closed due to the Karnataka bandh.

With major transport services likely to be unavailable and disruptions expected in daily activities, residents are urged to plan their schedules accordingly. The Karnataka bandh on March 22 may also impact schools, businesses, and essential services, making it important for people to stay updated on further announcements.
