IPL 2024: Karnataka Man Loses Rs 1 Crore In Betting, Wife Commits Suicide

In a saddening incident, a 23-year-old woman reportedly committed suicide after her husband lost a big amount in online betting. According to the reports, a Karnataka-based engineer, Darshan Babu, lost over Rs 1 crore in IPL cricket betting, after which, his wife purportedly decided to end her life. Police identified the woman as Ranjitha who was found hanging at her home in Chitradurga on March 18. It is said that she was tired of constant harassment by creditors, who lent money to Darshan Babu for cricket betting.

The reports said Darshan Babu lost money during IPL betting from 2021 to 2023. He had ensnared lenders that he would win money in the upcoming edition of IPL but before that, he lost his life partner.

An investigating officer told the media that Babu had a loan of Rs 1.5 crores, he managed to return around Rs 1 crore, and Rs 84 lakh was left.

The deceased's father told the media that his son-in-law was addicted to betting and had a dream of being a rich man in no time.

"He (Darshan) was not willing to get into betting, but the suspects forced him saying it was an easy way to get rich. They promised to finance his betting activities against some blank cheques as security," he said.

The report said Police also recovered a suicide note next to the dead body during their investigation, where she mentioned that she is taking this unfortunate step following harassment she faced. The couple has a two-year-old son.
