Bangalore, Feb 17: Bangalore-based AIADMK leader KR Krishna Raju on Sunday opened Amma's mess in Karnataka capital to sell low-cost idlis, at Re 1 a piece.
A huge number of customers had gathered opposite Kalasipalya Police Station, a busy area off KR Market, to visit the mess on first day and they were offered "free idlis". Over 6,000 idlis were reportedly sold on 1st day of the launch.
According to TOI report, Amma's mess will be opened between 7am and 10am on Sundays and the menu will be idlis with hot sambar- at subsidised rates.
KR Krishna Raju, a former AIADMK secretary of Karnataka, told the newspaper, "We'll make it an everyday affair after some weeks because there are some logistical issues to be sorted out."
"I've involved some poor slum women to prepare these idlis. I'm confident of sustaining this programme for a year but I'm hopeful that by then, the Karnataka government will provide some kind of help and open more such canteens," he added.
Customers were offered "free idlis" on Day 1 in Bangalore.
Raju, Jayalalithaa's follower from last 40 years, also plans to submit a memorandum to the Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to seek permission to open more such pocket-friendly canteens, which can be easily afforded by poor people to feed themselves and their families.
The AIADMK's idea behind selling idlis at cheap prices, outside Tamil Nadu, can be seen as the party's attempt to publicise Jayalalithaa in front of common people or voters, to strike a chord.
"Amma Unavagam" (Budget canteen), is a novel scheme launched by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the state.
Besides serving as good idea to feed poor at cheap rates, it also seems as a well-planned strategy to woo voters ahead of upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2014.
In Jayalalithaa's home-state, Tamil Nadu, popular Amma's idlis, sell like hotcakes. But the question is "Will one rupee idlis and low cost rice reap votes for Jayalalithaa?"

Call it a real concern towards poor or a poll gimmick before LS polls, Jayalalithaa's novel scheme has won hearts of many in Tamil Nadu.
