In Bengaluru, a city battered by relentless rainfall, the adverse effects are increasingly visible, leading to tragic incidents and widespread concerns over infrastructure and public safety. In one heart-wrenching episode, two siblings, a brother and sister living in a slum adjacent to Kengeri Lake, have vanished as of Monday evening.

Brother And Sister Drown In Kengeri Lake As Bengaluru Faces Severe Weather

The two siblings, identified as Srinivas (13) and his younger sister Lakshmi (11), are feared to have drowned in Kengeri Lake while fetching water. The tragic incident occurred around 6 PM yesterday, leaving the community in mourning and their family devastated.

According to reports, the siblings had gone to the lake to collect water when the accident happened. Their mother, Nagamma, who works with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), was unaware of the tragedy until it was too late. The children's father, Raja, had passed away two years ago, and they had been living with their mother and elder sister, Dhanalakshmi, since then.

It is believed that while playing near the lake, Lakshmi accidentally dropped her bindi into the water. As she tried to retrieve it, she slipped and fell in. Seeing his sister in distress, Srinivas called for help and jumped in to save her, but tragically, both are feared to have drowned.

Nagamma, a BBMP garbage sorter, shared her heartache: "My children's clothes and Lakshmi's bindi were found near the lake. We have no one left. My children never left me."

56-Year-Old Woman Dies On Pothole-Riddled Sarjapur Road

Adding to the city's woes, a 56-year-old woman lost her life in the Sarjapur area of Bengaluru under tragic circumstances directly linked to the city's battered road conditions. While riding pillion on her husband's scooter, a collision occurred with a mini-truck, triggered by their attempt to navigate through the perilous potholes exacerbated by the heavy rains. This incident underscores the lethal combination of poor infrastructure and extreme weather, putting citizens' lives at risk.

Disabled woman falls into waterlogged pothole

In another distressing account, a video from Bengaluru showcases the struggles faced by a differently-abled woman trying to navigate a waterlogged street. The video captures a moment of community spirit as people assist her out of a pothole, providing her with crutches to stand. This incident occurred in Varthur, once again throwing light on the city's failing infrastructure.

The authorities, through their social media on X, expressed their dismay at the incident, stating, "A physically challenged woman recently fell into a pothole in Varthur, a tragic incident that has left [us] utterly speechless. It is shocking and heartbreaking to witness the deteriorating conditions, the people of Mahadevapura, endure, despite contributing over ₹1000 crore in taxes." The post further criticized the local governance, accusing them of prioritizing image over the actual well-being and safety of its citizens, urging for immediate action to rectify the failing infrastructure.

The city of Bengaluru, despite its technological advancements and economic contributions, is grappling with the consequences of inadequate urban planning and maintenance, particularly in times of natural calamities such as heavy rains.
