Bengaluru's Second International Airport: Shortlisted Locations Await Site Inspection Report By AAI
Bengaluru is set to take a major step in improving its air connectivity, with the Karnataka government expected to receive the site inspection report for a second international airport within the next two to three days. The Airports Authority of India has completed its assessment, and the state cabinet will review the report before deciding on the next steps, according to Infrastructure Development Minister M B Patil.

Speaking to the media, Patil explained that the government has set a target of 2033 for completing the airport. He added that if preparations start now, the project could meet the deadline, noting that it typically takes five to six years to build an airport.
''Two locations are under consideration. One site could provide five to six thousand acres, but the final decision will also depend on economic feasibility and other practical factors that airport developers consider,'' Patil told.
Currently, only New Delhi (Jewar) and Mumbai (Navi Mumbai) have more than one airport serving the city. A second airport in Bengaluru would help ease congestion at the existing Kempegowda International Airport while supporting the city's growing industrial, commercial, and tourism sectors. The government is also consulting companies that built the second airports in Delhi and Mumbai to follow best practices.
Update: He further said that the government has begun the process while taking into account the clause that restricts the setting up of another international airport within a 150 km radius of Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) until 2033.
There is some debate about the location. Representatives from North Karnataka have suggested building the airport near Tumkur, while others feel that a southern Bengaluru location would better serve the city. Patil made it clear that the decision will take into account passenger traffic, industrial requirements, and convenience to ensure a well-balanced outcome.
Oneindia had earlier reported that the two areas inspected by the AAI are Harohalli, Chudahalli and Somanahalli on Kanakapura Road, and Nelamangala, including Solur near Kunigal. Both sites were examined for accessibility, land availability, and suitability for airport construction.
A second international airport in Bengaluru could improve connectivity, reduce pressure on the existing airport, and support the city's continued growth. With the AAI report expected shortly, the state cabinet's decision could finally set the city on the path to a long-awaited infrastructure project.
