Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway: Ongoing Traffic Jams Create Commuter Frustration
Travelers making the journey from Mysuru to Bengaluru, expecting a smooth two-hour drive on a 117-kilometer highway, often find themselves caught in a frustrating bottleneck as they near Bengaluru. This congestion, most acute on weekends, adds a significant delay in the last stretch between the Panchamukhi Ganesha temple and the NICE Road Junction, turning a quick trip into a prolonged ordeal. Despite the highway's efficiency for the majority of the route, the final bottleneck erases any time savings, presenting a particular inconvenience for those on the road.

The congestion intensifies in the evening when the volume of vehicles on the Bengaluru-Mysuru National Highway swells to over 70,000, according to The Hindu report. This surge in traffic leads to a standstill, causing distress not only to commuters but also to residents in the vicinity. Despite the deployment of traffic police and additional personnel to manage the flow, the efforts barely make a dent. The convergence of vehicles from the flyover and service road creates a significant choke point, frustrating many who had hoped for a faster journey.
The root of the traffic jam lies in vehicles from Mysuru Road avoiding toll charges by using the service road, merging with traffic from the elevated highway. This merging of flows creates a critical choke point. Despite the traffic police’s efforts to collaborate with the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to find a resolution and the additional deployment of personnel during peak times, the problem persists. The volume of traffic proves too overwhelming, leaving local residents to deal with daily disruptions and congestion.
In response to the persistent bottleneck, the BBMP has proposed extending the elevated flyover to the NICE Road Junction to circumvent the congestion. However, this solution faces hurdles due to the existing elevated metro corridor, complicating any potential road expansion or new flyover construction. Amid these challenges, pedestrian safety near the Challaghatta metro station is a growing concern. To address this, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has approved the construction of a foot-over-bridge (FoB) by the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). This infrastructure aims to ensure safe pedestrian crossing and potentially ease some traffic-related issues at this critical junction.
The congestion issue, dating back to the highway's inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 12, 2023, has sparked discussions on possible solutions. Among these, extending the elevated flyover to the NICE Road Junction and increasing the number of traffic personnel on weekends are prominent suggestions. However, the combination of high vehicle volumes and the strategic merging points continues to challenge these proposals, underscoring the need for a comprehensive and effective resolution to mitigate the bottleneck.
