Bengaluru Cauvery Water Bill To Cost More As BWSSB Proposes 40% Hike

After the Karnataka government shocked residents with a hike in petrol and diesel prices, Bengaluru may face another price hike. After the Lok Sabha elections in 2024, the state government has hinted at increasing Cauvery water prices, and it seems that this hike is finally happening after a decade. The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has already sent a proposal to the government, suggesting a rate increase.

The Urban Development Minister, D.K. Shivakumar, had hinted at this revision earlier, and now it seems like he will approve the proposal. The last time Cauvery water rates were revised was in 2014, and the board is waiting for the state government's nod to increase them again.

The proposed rate hike is expected to be around 40% for both domestic and commercial users. This means that Bengaluru residents will have to pay more for their daily Cauvery water supply. Despite inconsistent water supply, citizens are already paying their bills by getting tankers, and now they are worried about how they will cope with another increase.

Many people are unhappy with the government's decision, feeling that they are being burdened with additional costs. They argue that the government promised benefits but is now trying to collect more money indirectly. With oil prices already increased, people are anxious about the impact of a potential water rate hike on their daily lives.

It's unclear when exactly the new rates will come into effect, but one thing is certain - Bengaluru residents are in for another financial shock.
