Bengaluru Bars, Restaurants And Clubs To Serve Liquor Until 1 AM As Karnataka Govt Extends Hours
In a move aimed at boosting revenue, the Karnataka government has extended the liquor-serving hours in clubs, star hotels, and bars & restaurants in Bengaluru. Effective immediately, these establishments can serve alcohol until 1 am, an extension from the previous deadline of 11 pm. The order was issued on July 29 and would apply to the establishments under the BBMP limits.

New Operational Hours for Licensed Establishments
As per the order, establishments with CL-4 (clubs), CL-6 (A) (star hotels), CL-7 (hotels and boarding houses), and CL-7D (hotels and boarding houses owned by individuals from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) licenses can now operate from 9 am to 1 am. Those holding CL-9 (refreshment room (bar)) licenses can operate from 10 am to 1 am.
More Business Opportunities and Job Creation
Welcoming the move, the president of the Bruhat Bangalore Hotels Association, PC Rao, said, "This will help the public and aid in job creation. Henceforth, bars, restaurants, shops, and other establishments in Bengaluru will remain open till 1 am."
The decision comes as part of the government's broader strategy to mobilize more resources. By allowing extended operating hours, the government anticipates an increase in sales, thereby enhancing revenue from excise duties and related taxes.
This extension is expected to benefit not only the state's coffers but also the hospitality industry, which has been advocating for longer hours to cater to both locals and tourists. The move aligns with the city's vibrant nightlife and is seen as a step towards making 'Brand Bengaluru' a more attractive destination for visitors.
Residents and business owners have welcomed the decision, expressing hope that it will invigorate the local economy.
It must be noted that if Bengaluru improves its nightlife, it will provide more jobs, particularly in the hospitality and transport industries. Bengaluru is home to around 1.50 crore people, including some 50 lakh migrants. The city's central business district includes a 10-km radius around the Karnataka assembly. Recently developed commercial areas include Whitefield and Devanahalli.
Netizens React to the Extended Li Hours
The announcement has sparked mixed reactions on X (Formerly Twitter). While some appreciate the economic benefits, others are concerned about the negative impacts:
One user said, "This is good but also pls enforce strict campaigns against drink and drive every night." Another commented, "Basically making more addicts to increase Khatakhat." A third user tweeted, "More money from sales and fines."
Another person shared, "Did they really need to make it official? This Sunday night I saw groups of drunks at various places loitering around even at 3 am, eating from food carts in ORR belt. This included 4 girls somehow staggering home under Marathahalli underpass."
Another expressed concerns, "Along with revenue generation, also increase in crimes, rapes, mobile thefts, and accidents will also see a steep increase. Extra duty for the already staff-crunched, overworked police force. I don't know where all this will lead to finally. Already negative impacts of parks open day all is seen."
