AI Traffic Signals Installed at 125 Bengaluru Junctions to Ease Jams: Here’s How They Work
Traffic congestion in Bengaluru continues to be a growing concern, prompting the Bengaluru Traffic Police to implement innovative measures to manage the city's traffic flow.
As part of these efforts, the police have installed artificial intelligence (AI)-based automatic signals to tackle congestion. Currently, AI-powered signals have been deployed at 125 junctions, with plans to extend the system to 165 junctions across the city. This ambitious project comes at a cost of ₹53 crore and has been implemented by C-DoT Company.

How AI-Based Signals Work
The AI-powered traffic signals operate 24/7, ensuring smoother traffic management, particularly during peak hours. These signals function under two advanced systems:
- Adaptive Traffic Control System (BATCAS) - This system detects the level of traffic on different roads and adjusts the green signal accordingly to facilitate smoother movement.
- Vehicle Actuated Control (VAC) - This system provides longer green signals to heavily congested routes while reducing the green signal time for less crowded roads, optimizing traffic flow.
Benefits of AI Traffic Signals
The introduction of AI-based signals is expected to bring significant improvements, including:
- Reduced Travel Time: AI signals are projected to cut down travel time by 33%, ensuring faster commutes.
- Minimized Traffic Congestion: By efficiently managing peak-hour traffic, these signals will help prevent unnecessary traffic jams.
- Optimized Waiting Time: The system prioritizes busier routes, thereby reducing waiting times and ensuring a more seamless traffic experience for commuters.
With the integration of AI technology, Bengaluru aims to modernize its traffic management system and provide relief to daily commuters who struggle with the city's notorious traffic congestion. The expansion of AI signals to additional junctions is expected to further enhance the city's traffic efficiency in the coming months.
