Actor Turned Politician CP Yogeshwara Resigns From Karnataka Legislative Council Ahead Of Bypolls
BJP leader and Karnataka Legislative Council member CP Yogeshwara has resigned from his position. He submitted his resignation at the residence of Council chairman Basavaraj Horatti. This move indicates his intention to contest the upcoming Assembly by-election in Channapatna, scheduled for November 13. The BJP has allocated this seat to its alliance partner, JD(S).
Yogeshwara, who transitioned from acting to politics, is considering running as an independent candidate. He plans to consult with supporters and party workers before making a final decision. Despite the BJP's alliance with JD(S), he has requested a ticket from BJP leadership to contest the election. "I have worked for the party for many years, and the people of our taluk will ensure my victory," he stated, reaffirming his dedication to the BJP.

Channapatna Seat Dynamics
The Channapatna seat became vacant after H D Kumaraswamy, JD(S) state president, was elected to the Lok Sabha. By-elections are also set for Sandur and Shiggaon Assembly segments, where BJP candidates have already been announced. Yogeshwara clarified that he remains a BJP member and hopes to contest under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). However, Kumaraswamy will announce the final candidate for Channapatna, creating uncertainty about Yogeshwara's prospects.
Initially, there were talks of Yogeshwara contesting on a JD(S) ticket. However, he prefers a BJP nomination. He remarked, "While I have no issue contesting as a JD(S) candidate, my supporters have been against this alliance for nearly 25 years." This highlights his long-standing ties with BJP supporters in the region.
Potential Challenges and Speculations
Kumaraswamy is reportedly considering fielding his son Nikhil Kumaraswamy for Channapatna. Nikhil lost in the 2023 Assembly elections from Ramanagara and seeks to regain political ground. This complicates Yogeeshwar's aspirations further. Speculation also exists about Yogeeshwar possibly joining Congress as their candidate. However, he denied any contact with Congress leaders regarding such a shift.
The deadline for filing nominations is October 25, with withdrawals allowed until October 30. As Karnataka's political scene evolves, attention focuses on whether Yogeeshwar can secure a candidacy aligning with his regional connections.
