Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway Route Map: 4-Lane Highway Connecting Hoskote To Sriperumbudur Ready By December

The 262 km-long Bengaluru-Chennai expressway, being built at a cost of over Rs 17,930 crore, will be operational by December 2024, said BJP leader and three-time MP from the Bangalore Central constituency, PC Mohan.

The Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway (BCE) project, officially NE-7, is an under-construction 4-lane access-controlled road connecting Hoskote near Bengaluru, Karnataka, with Sriperumbudur near Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The expressway is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to only two hours.

According to reports, the Karnataka section of the expressway is nearly completed and could soon be open to traffic. However, the sections in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu still have significant work remaining and and are far from being finished.

This greenfield project, first announced in 2011, is now being developed under the Bharatmala Pariyojana program. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid its foundation stone on May 26, 2022.

Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had also announced that the Bengaluru-Chennai greenfield (new) expressway will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi before December this year.

The 262 km-long Bengaluru-Chennai expressway is being built at a cost of over Rs 17,930 crore and will pass through the states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu. The highway will be eight lanes for a distance of 240 km, with the remainder being an elevated stretch of 22 km. Nearly 2,650 hectares of land were acquired for the project.

Bangalore - Chennai Expressway's feasibility and preliminary design report was prepared by Egis - BCEOM International - SECON in 2009. The report suggests the expressway will get saturated in 2029 (4 lane), 2037 (6 lane) and 2041 (8 lane).

This expressway was originally envisioned as an 8 lane road from the get-go, but was downgraded to 4 lanes in mid-2020 keeping the projected traffic in mind. The expressway will feature a 21 meter wide depressed median and all structures (bridges, culverts etc.) will be built up to allow for future widening to 8 lanes from the inside.
