Google Introduces 'Search Live' for its AI-Powered Search: What It Is and How It Changes Search Experience

Google has introduced a new feature called Search Live, which allows users to engage in voice-activated conversations with Google Search via its mobile app. This feature is currently available for Android and iOS users in the United States who have opted into the AI Mode experiment in Labs. It transforms traditional search into an interactive dialogue using a customised version of Gemini.

Users can initiate Search Live by tapping the "Live" icon in the Google app and asking questions verbally. The system responds with AI-generated audio answers and displays relevant web links on the screen. This setup allows users to ask follow-up questions naturally without restarting the search process. For instance, one might inquire about packing tips for travel and then seamlessly ask about preventing wrinkles or organising luggage.

Enhanced Multitasking Capabilities

The feature operates in the background, enabling users to continue conversations while using other apps. A transcript button provides text versions of responses, allowing users to switch between voice and typed interactions easily. This functionality caters to the growing demand for hands-free search capabilities, especially for those multitasking or on the move.

Search Live combines Google's established search infrastructure with advanced voice technology, maintaining the reliability users expect from Google Search while adding conversational capabilities. The system employs Google's "query fan-out technique" to display diverse web content. However, concerns have arisen about whether this approach might reduce traffic to original sources since users can receive complete information without clicking through to websites.

Visual Search Integration

Google plans to enhance Search Live further by integrating camera-based interactions in the coming months. This will allow users to show real-time visuals while maintaining voice conversations. Announced at Google I/O earlier this year, this enhancement will enable assistance with visual problems like math equations or real-world objects encountered by users.

This innovative feature reflects Google's commitment to evolving its search capabilities by incorporating conversational elements and visual aids. As technology advances, such features are expected to become more prevalent, offering users a more interactive and efficient way to access information.
