Asaram Bapu
Jodhpur, Sept 3: 72-year-old Asaram Bapu, the self-styled godman, might not have experienced such humiliation in his lifetime what he has been experiencing since his arrest on Sept 1. The septuagenarian faced potency test as he has been accused of molesting a 16-year-old school girl in his ashram near Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

Jodhpur Police conducted the potency test to assemble strong evidence against the accused who have been denying all allegations hurled against him. According to media reports, the self-styled godman initially had objected to go for the test when doctors approached him on Sunday, Sept 1. However, Asaram changed his mind and claimed that doctors could do anything with his body which is "nashwar" (mortal).

Later the 72-year-old surprised the team of the doctors saying that he would go for the test without taking any legal aide from his lawyer. He did not even consult a legal expert as he could have approached court seeking more time or to stay the procedure(s).

What is Potency Test?

Police generally conduct potency test on an accused in rape cases. It helps police to determine their charges and evidences against accused. Potency test determines the physical ability of the accused to reach a state of arousal. It shows whether the person is capable of reaching a state of penetration.

Potency tests are being done using various methods. While some try to cause stimulation of private parts through manual movements, other injects drug stimulators like papaverine.

Why are you doing unholy things, asked Asaram

According to media reports, in Asaram's cae, drugs like papaverine were not used and stimulation of private parts resulted in erection and proved his potency. Times of India quoted one source saying that Asaram was hesitant initially and even asked doctors why they were doing such an "unholy" thing. But he was persuaded by the policemen and doctors to take the test.

The 72-year-old was on Monday sent to 14-day judicial custody. The "guru", however, remained defiant about the rape charges but agreed to have spent some time alone with the 16-year-old girl, who has accused him of raping her.
