Kolkata Taratala Roof Collapse: 5 Dead, 50-60 Workers Were At Under-Construction Warehouse

A roof collapse at an under-construction warehouse in Kolkata's Taratala area triggered a major rescue operation on Wednesday afternoon, leaving five workers dead and several others injured. Emergency teams, local residents and disaster response personnel rushed to the site as ambulances transported the injured to nearby hospitals.

The accident reportedly took place when concrete casting work was underway at the warehouse site. Local accounts suggested that around 50 to 60 workers were present when a section of the structure gave way. Officials later confirmed that five people lost their lives in the collapse, while rescue teams continued searching the debris for any remaining trapped workers.

Residents were among the first to respond after the collapse. They rushed towards the site and tried to pull out those within reach before police, fire brigade personnel and rescue teams arrived. The rescue effort later expanded, with specialised teams using gas cutters to cut through large iron beams blocking access to trapped workers.

A crane was also deployed to remove heavy sections of the collapsed structure. Rescue teams were working carefully because unstable concrete slabs and metal frames could shift during removal. Such operations are often slow, as rescuers must balance speed with the risk of further collapse over people still stuck inside.

Local residents claimed cries for help could be heard from beneath the debris after the accident. That raised hopes that some of the trapped workers could still be reached alive. Ambulances remained stationed near the site, and injured workers were being taken for treatment. Some of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.

Units from the National Disaster Response Force and the Indian Army also joined the rescue effort, according to officials at the scene. Control room opened as officials monitor rescue operation

The West Bengal disaster management department opened a control room at Nabanna, the state secretariat, to coordinate information related to the accident. Senior officials and public representatives reached the accident site as rescue work continued. Kolkata Municipal Corporation commissioner-administrator Smita Pandey was among those present to oversee coordination. Political leaders, including Rakesh Singh, Agnimitra Paul and Indranil Khan, also visited the location after information about the collapse spread.

Police were managing crowd control around the site, a crucial part of any rescue operation in a densely built urban area. Large crowds can block ambulances, fire tenders and machinery. Officials were expected to keep the immediate collapse zone restricted until engineers and rescue personnel assessed the stability of the remaining structure.
