Mumbai School Holiday On June 25: Are Schools & Colleges Open In Rain Hit City?

Mumbai's first major monsoon spell of the season threw daily life off balance on Wednesday as relentless overnight rain flooded roads, disrupted rail services and left thousands of commuters struggling to reach work. It also caused a lot of inconvenience to school and college students who are now eager to know whether there is a holiday for educational institutions on Thursday, June 24.

The city received exceptionally heavy rainfall after the southwest monsoon finally arrived a day earlier. Several parts of Mumbai and its suburbs recorded more than 200 mm of rain within 24 hours, leading to waterlogging in vulnerable pockets and triggering traffic snarls during the morning rush.

According to civic data, the island city received an average of 195 mm of rainfall between 8 am Tuesday and 8 am Wednesday. The western suburbs recorded 208 mm, while the eastern suburbs logged 167 mm during the same period.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more rain over the next 24 hours, warning of moderate to heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Low-lying areas such as Hindmata, King's Circle and the Andheri subway witnessed significant water accumulation in the early hours, slowing traffic and causing inconvenience to motorists. With rain continuing through the morning, civic authorities remained on alert for fresh incidents of flooding.

Mumbai's lifeline - its suburban railway network - also felt the impact. Commuters reported delays and overcrowded trains, especially on Central Railway routes, as services were regulated due to rain-related issues.

The worst disruption was seen on the Trans-Harbour line after a track cave-in between Turbhe and Koparkhairane stations. Railway officials said excessive water flow led to damage on the tracks, forcing restrictions on train movement during peak hours.

The affected section was declared unsafe before dawn, resulting in delays on services connecting Thane with Vashi and Panvel. Restoration work was carried out on priority, and train operations gradually resumed with speed restrictions in place.

Western Railway services, however, continued to operate without major interruptions despite the heavy downpour.

Adding to concerns was the high tide situation. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recorded a morning high tide of 3.41 metres and warned of another high tide in the evening. Heavy rainfall coinciding with high tides often worsens flooding in Mumbai, making drainage difficult.

The IMD had issued a red alert for Mumbai and neighbouring Palghar district in the early hours of Wednesday, warning of intense rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching up to 60 kmph. The alert was later downgraded to orange as weather conditions showed signs of easing, though authorities cautioned that strong rain spells could continue through the day.

The monsoon's arrival in Mumbai came 13 days later than its usual onset date of June 10. While the rains brought relief from weeks of humid weather, they also served as a reminder of the city's recurring monsoon challenges.

As for students and parents awaiting a holiday announcement, there is currently no official declaration of closure for schools or colleges in Mumbai on June 25. The BMC has not issued any order suspending classes, and educational institutions are expected to function as usual unless fresh instructions are released. Authorities have advised residents to keep track of official updates as weather conditions continue to evolve.
