Saradha fiasco: Sudipta Sen sent to 14-day police custody

Group chairman-cum-managing director Sudipta Sen was sent to 14-day of police custody by Bidhannagar additional chief judicial magistrate court on Thursday. Two of his associates, Debjani Mukherjee and Aravinda Singh Chauhan, who were caught with him from Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, were also sent to the police custody. Cases were filed under Sections 420, 406 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.

The court has also asked the police to find if additional cases were lodged against them or not and submit a report within seven days.

Meanwhile, protesters thronged outside the court while Sen and his associates were being escorted inside. Congress supporters also demonstrated against the Saradha officials. A large police force was deployed in the court premises to prevent any untoward incident.

The Saradha chit fund scheme went bust, robbing thousands of their life savings and also the entire empire of Sen, comprising various businesses including media, collapsed, throwing many people out of job. A couple of persons also committed suicide after losing money and prestige in the scam.

Some members of the ruling Trinamool Congress are also allegedly involved in the scam. Sen had mentioned names of some top leaders of the party in his explosive 18-page letter written to the CBI.
