David Petraeus
Washington, Nov 17: Former CIA director David Petraeus on Friday said while testifying before the Congress that as per classified intelligence sources, the deadly Sept 11 attacks on the US Consulate in Libya this year was a terrorist attack.

Petraeus, who recently quit the post of CIA chief over an extra-marital affair, said the administration did not reveal the suspected role of the al Qaeda affiliated in the attack as it wanted to avoid tipping them off.

He said that references to terrorist groups suspected of executing the violence were deliberately avoided from being revealed to the public so that the outfits were not alerted about the fact that the US intelligence was following them, according to sources.

The retired four-star general addressed the House and Senate intelligence panels in successive and confidential hearings as questions were being raised over what the Obama Administration knew in the immediate aftermaths of the attack in Libya and why the public explanation did not match with the assessment made by the intelligence agencies.

The US Ambassador to Libya, Chris Stevens, along with three other Americans was killed during the attack.
