NTA Announces Big Changes For NEET-UG 2026 Retest; Candidates To Get 15 Additional Minutes

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a series of student-friendly changes for the upcoming NEET-UG 2026 re-examination, including an additional 15 minutes in the exam schedule and more space for rough work inside the question booklet.

The move comes as the agency attempts to restore confidence in the examination process after the original test was cancelled over alleged paper leak concerns.

The revised NEET-UG re-exam will be conducted on June 21, 2026, with candidates now getting a total examination window of 195 minutes, from 2:00 PM to 5:15 PM.

NTA Extends NEET-UG Re-Exam Duration

One of the biggest changes introduced by the NTA is the extension of the overall examination duration. While the actual time available for answering questions remains unchanged, the additional 15 minutes have been built into the schedule to accommodate mandatory administrative procedures.

According to officials, activities such as attendance verification, signature collection, invigilator instructions and other formalities often take away valuable time from candidates. The revised timing ensures that these processes are completed without affecting the actual time students need to attempt the paper.

More Space for Rough Work in Question Booklets

Apart from extending the exam window, the agency has also redesigned the question booklet to provide more room for rough calculations and diagrams.

Earlier, candidates were given only two pages for rough work. Under the revised format, every candidate will now receive four rough-work pages.

The layout of these pages has also been changed. Two pages will now appear immediately after the instruction page at the beginning of the booklet, while the remaining two pages will continue to be provided at the end.

Officials said the modification was made after receiving feedback from students who felt that the earlier arrangement was inconvenient during the examination.

Relief for Left-Handed Candidates

The redesigned question booklet is also expected to make the examination more comfortable for left-handed students.

Several candidates had reportedly pointed out that the previous booklet format made it difficult to write and perform calculations comfortably. By relocating part of the rough-work section to the beginning of the booklet, the NTA hopes to make the process easier for all students.

The revised design will be available across both English and regional language versions of the NEET-UG question paper.

Why Is NEET-UG 2026 Being Conducted Again?

The fresh examination comes after the original NEET-UG 2026 test, held on May 3, was cancelled by the NTA on May 12 following allegations of a question paper leak.

The controversy sparked widespread concern among students and parents, with demands for a transparent investigation and a fair re-examination process. The matter is currently being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

In response, the NTA and the Ministry of Education have introduced several additional security measures to ensure that the re-exam remains free from irregularities.

Tight Security Measures for the Re-Exam

Authorities have reportedly placed all experts involved in preparing the NEET-UG re-exam question paper under strict isolation at a secure and undisclosed location. The move is aimed at preventing any possibility of information leaks before the examination.

Sources indicate that enhanced surveillance, tighter access controls and stronger coordination between agencies are being implemented for the June 21 examination.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has also directed officials to address every weakness identified during the previous examination cycle. According to reports, the ministry has instructed the NTA to strengthen procedures and ensure that students can appear for the re-exam with complete confidence in the fairness of the system.

The additional 15 minutes, revised booklet format and strengthened security arrangements reflect the government's attempt to make the NEET-UG 2026 re-exam more student-friendly and transparent.
