Chennai:Bank robbery suspect was an SRM engineering pass out

Chennai, Feb 23: One of the five suspects who was killed in a police encounter in Chennai on Thursday, was a former student of Kattankolathur SRM Engineering College, Tamil Nadu.

According to reports, the deceased used to work as agent for the college and the gang members hailed from Bihar. The suspect used to bring in students from his hometown to college and earned a good commission for that, said reports. He later took shelter to robbery. The Police acting on a tip off surrounded a house in Vandikaran Street in Velachery at 1 am and asked the suspects to surrender themselves, said a police officer. The suspects, however, did not yield to the warnings and open fired injuring two inspectors.

Meanwhile, the police recovered Rs 14 lakhs in cash and 7 guns from spot where the men were killed.

It is suspected that same gang was involved in robbing other banks across the city and the matter is being looked into.
