We sympathise with Krittika: US Homeland Secretary

Krittika
New Delhi, May 28: The US administration on Friday, May 27, expressed sympathy with the daughter of an Indian diplomat in New York, over whose arrest India has voiced protest.

"I think we can all sympathise with this young woman who has apparently been caught into a situation of her own making," US Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano said.

Krittika, daughter of the vice counsel at the Indian Consulate in Manhattan Debashish Biswas was arrested in February on suspicion of sending obscene e-mails to her teacher. She was released a day later after being found innocent.

"The matter is now being litigated in our court. Under rules in the United States, it is not proper to comment on the matters that are in the court," Napolitano said.

Krittika is now suing New York City's Government for USD 1.5 million for what she claims was a wrongful arrest.

After her release, India had lodged protest with the US administration on the manner in which Krittika was treated by the US authorities.
