Three of family convicted for abetment to suicide

Mohali, Feb 18 (PTI) A man, along with his parents, weretoday convicted by a local court for abetting his wife''ssuicide.

Special Judge Rajinder Aggarwal sentenced the husbandSanjiv Kumar, father-in-law Pritam Chand and mother-in-lawSaroj Kumari to six years of rigorous imprisonment forabetting suicide of 30-year-old Sonika.

It also imposed a fine of Rs 1,000 each on them.

Sonika, mother to a 3-year-old son and a six-month-olddaughter, committed suicide by immolating herself at herin-laws'' place in Dera Bassi near Mohali on August 30, 2010.

Acting on her uncle''s complaint, police on August 31booked Sanjiv and his parents under Sections 304-B (dowrydeath), 306 (abetment to suicide), 406 (criminal breach oftrust) and 498-A (husband or his relative subjecting womanto cruelty) of the IPC.

The court, however, acquitted the accused of the dowrydeath charge.

Sonika and Sanjiv were married in September 2006. Butsoon Sonika had problems with her in-laws and had complainedto her uncle many times about the harassment by her in-laws.
