Cong leader gets 10-year jail term in drug recovery case

Faridkot, Feb 12 (PTI) A local Congress leader, her sonand husband were among five persons who were awarded 10-yearjail term by a local court in a drug recovery case.

Punjab Congress'' women cell vice president Veena Sharma,her husband Ram, son Simmerjit, UP-based smugglers Narain Dassand Rajpal were sentenced to 10-year imprisonment by Districtand Sessions Judge Fatehdeep Singh yesterday.

A fine of Rs one lakh each was also imposed on them.

Sharma was arrested by Faridkot Police on October 16,2007 along with her husband and son during a raid at herresidence. Police had recovered 2 kg opium from her house.

According to police, Dass, Rajpal and another woman hadbrought the contraband to Faridkot.

The woman was named as the sixth accused in the case butshe jumped bail and was declared as a proclaimed offender bythe court.
