Irom Sharmila awarded Tagore Peace Prize
Imphal, Sep 14: The iron lady, Irom Sharmila, who has been on fast-unto-death for the past nine years demanding withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1958 from Manipur, has been awarded 'Rabindranath Tagore Peace Prize".
The award carrying Rs 51 lakhs was presented by the director of Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM).
Speaking at the award ceremony, Dr. MK Choudhury stated that Sharmila is one of the unique and bravest women in the country who stands for the society. He described her as a symbol of peace, courage and sacrifice.
Social activist, Sharmila said, the cash would be donated for the Womens' Welafare and children who have been the victims of child trafficking in the state.
Sharmila began her fast after the Assam Rifles killed 10 people at Malom village in Imphal valley.
