Malay Indian leader says Tamil schools will not be closed

Kuala Lumpur, Aug.17 (ANI): Senior Malaysian Indian Congress leader and Malaysia's Human Resources Minister Dr. S. Subramaniam has said that none of the 523 Tamil schools in Malaysia will be closed even if there is poor enrolment.

The Star and the Makkal Osai quoted him, as saying that the Malay Indian community would not accept the closing of any Tamil school.

In a recent meeting with the Education Minister and other ministers, he said 69 Tamil schools have fewer than 25 students. Some have only two students with five teachers.

Dr Subramaniam said the government had accepted the memorandums and suggestions forwarded by the MIC and that the Prime Minister in acknowledging the problems had formed the Special Indian Taskforce Committee to address them. (ANI)
