WB: Acid attack on local train, 10 women injured

Kolkata, Aug 12: In a mindless act of violence, unidentified miscreants threw acid on a ladies compartment of a suburban train injuring as many as ten women.

The incident took place at around 7:35 pm on Wednesday, Aug 11 when Sealdah-Baruipur local train was proceeding towards the Dhakuria railway station, government railway police (GRP) officials said.

The officials informed that acid was hurled at the ladies compartment from the right side of the train after it had passed through Ballygunge railway station.

Shahnawaz Begum of Mallickpur area of Baruipur, one of the injured, told a news agency that after the acid hit the compartment was filled with smoke. She recalled feeling burning sensation on her skin.

Two of the ten women have sustained grievous injuries.

Eastern Railway sources, however, said that only seven women were injured.

Two of the seriously injured women were rushed to National Medical College Hospital in Kolkata while the other were given medical aid at the Sonarpur and the Baruipur railway station.
